Archive Warning FAQ
Mar. 8th, 2022 06:41 pmSince we are matching on archive warnings, we wanted to do a quick run through to help explain them. It can be confusing!
You are selecting archive warnings to indicate what you would be comfortable creating or receiving. You are only matched on one archive warning, so even if you check three of them, you may only get a gift with one of those warnings included, even if that warning is "no archive warnings apply".
What does it mean if I mark...
Choose not to use archive warnings: The work MIGHT contain rape/non-con, underage, major character death, or graphic depictions of violence. The work does not include a warning for these. It might NOT contain any of them, but if it does, THIS TAG MEANS THAT THE AUTHOR DID NOT WARN FOR IT.
It doesn't mean that it does not exist. Do not select this if you want a work that has no archive warning content in it. That is not what this means.
No archive warnings apply: This work does not contain rape/non-con, underage, major character death, or graphic depictions of violence. Select this if you want or are open to a work that does not contain any of the archive warning themes.
Underage: This work contains underage content. Select this only if you are open to creating or receiving this content.
Rape/non-con: This work contains rape/non-con content. Select this only if you are open to creating or receiving this content.
Major character death: This work contains major character death. Select this only if you are open to creating or receiving this content.
Graphic depictions of violence: This work contains graphic depictions of violence. Select this only if you are open to creating or receiving this content.
If you do not want any archive warnings in your work, you need to select "No archive warnings apply" not "Choose not to use archive warnings." We can't stress enough that there is a huge difference between those two warnings.
If you are open to ANY archive warning content and do not want it warned for, you need to mark "Choose not to use archive warnings".
If you want a work to potentially contain any of the archive warnings but not all of them, you need to select, one by one, which archive warnings you are offering or requesting. If that is only underage, only select underage. If that is underage and major character death, select both of those.
Examples:

This person is willing to create or receive (depending on which section they are filling out) works that DO NOT CONTAIN any of the following: rape/non-con, underage, major character death, or graphic depictions of violence.

This person is willing to create or receive (depending on which section they are filling out) works that either:
1. DO NOT CONTAIN any of the following: rape/non-con, underage, major character death, or graphic depictions of violence.
2. Contain graphic depictions of violence.
3. Contain major character death.
4. Contain both graphic depictions of violence and major character death.
A request like this only has to have ONE of the archive warnings fulfilled, so in this case, a work could contain none, could contain one of the checked boxes, or both of the checked boxes.
This doesn't mean that they have to create four different works, or will receive four different works, only that there are four possible archive warning outcomes for the one work they will receive.

This person is willing to create or receive (depending on which section they are filling out) ONLY works that contain major character death.
They may be difficult to match because they are not allowing for works that do not contain any archive warnings, so checking only this box is requiring that anything created MUST contain major character death.
If they are open to major character death but would not mind if there was no major character death, they need to check both "no archive warnings apply" and "major character death". If they truly only want to create/receive something that contains major character death, they would leave only this box checked, but again, may result in being unmatchable.
